Missions Month

"The darkest night is lit by just one candle
and loneliness retreats with just one touch
But in a world of pain and heartache
there are times I wonder
does the little I can do mean that much?
But reaching through the distance
out to one I've never met
The journey of a thousand miles begins
with this one step

One child at a time
will receive the gift of laughter
as one child at a time
we erase the face of fear
Turning good intentions into action
living in the spirit of compassion
We may not reach them all
but we'll try
One child at a time

Somewhere in this world
in a distant land
a future filled with hope
is resting in my hands
so I will strike a match
and hold my candle high
and I will do my part in shining
heaven's light

One child at a time
will receive the gift of laughter
as one child at a time
we erase the face of fear
we'll pray that love will multiply
these children we can care for
'till each one becomes a thousand
and a thousand becomes more
and more

we will bring the gift of laughter
as one child at a time
we erase the face of fear
turning good intentions into action
living in the spirit of compassion
we may not reach them all
but we'll try
One child at a time
One child at a time"

--

Even though missions month has ended, let's continue to be beacons of light, and shine for His glory!

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:19-20

This is the great commission, people! This is what He has commanded us to do!

GIGS is on 2nd September
Thief of Always (Believers musical) is on 8th and 9th September
These are great chances, people! Start inviting! Start praying! Maybe we will see an increase of people coming to church every week...

Compassion

"Look at grandpa!" laughed Molly, "He put his pants on backwards! And I think they are wet too!"

"Shhh!" said mother quietly as she gently pulled her twelve year old daughter aside.

"Why does grandpa do funny things sometimes, mom?" asked Molly. Mother let out a sigh, wiped her hands off on her apron, and knelt beside her youngest child.

"Molly dear, I know you don't fully understand what Alzheimer's disease is, but it's something that older people occasionally get, and it sometimes causes them to be a little confused. That's why grandpa came to live with us; because he was sometimes forgetting to turn the stove off, and to take his medicine."

Just as Molly was about to respond, there came a big chuckle from the corner of the room. Molly's eldest brother, Freddie, who was a bit of a smart-aleck, had been hiding by the china cabinet and taking in the whole conversation.

"What mom's trying to tell you, Molly," quipped Freddie, "is that grandpa is nuts, so don't pay him no attention!"Although mother was angry at Freddie's rude comment, more than anything, she was saddened.

As tears rolled down her cheeks, she sternly said, "Freddie, that is my FATHER, and I will not have you talk to or about him in such a disrespectful or belittling way. Sometimes grandpa might not be fully aware of what he is doing or saying, but more often than not, he DOES know, and gets upset that he is having a hard time doing the things that used to come easy to him. Just because he has some dementia does not mean he no longer has feelings!"

Freddie's head now hung low. It was obvious he regretted his thoughtless remark.Mother dabbed her eye with a tissue and continued, "Freddie, I want you to go to your room, and talk to God about this."Without so much as a word, Freddie shuffled away, his little sister following.

Later in the afternoon, both Molly and Freddie walked down the stairs in to the kitchen where mother stood over the sink washing dishes. In his hand was a piece of paper.

"I prayed over the matter, mom, and I believe God showed me what I need to do," he said matter-of-factly.

"Oh?" said mother, "And what's that? Say sorry?"

"Well, that, yes, but more importantly, I believe God wants me to share this Alzheimer's prayer Molly and I wrote with other families too," Freddie continued as he fumbled with the piece of paper in his hand.

Mother turned around, wiped her hands on her apron, smiled, and replied,
"Can I hear what you wrote?"Freddie cleared his throat, straitened his posture, and read:

An Alzheimer's Prayer

Dear God, please help my family, friends and care-givers see me for who I always was, and not for what this disease has taken from me.

Help them to see that I want to be treated just like they do; with courtesy, respect and sensitivity.

Remind them, God, that although I may sometimes get confused, even act irrationally, these things can scare, frustrate and sadden me as much as it does them.

I don't want to be treated like a misbehaving child. Let them know that the best thing they can do during these times is to take my hand lovingly and hold it or give me a warm hug, for shows of love are universally understood.

Help my visitors to understand how grateful and appreciative I am when they come and spend time with me. I don't need presents, just the precious gift of love. And just because I may forget their name doesn't mean the love I have for them in my heart has changed. I feel it, and am comforted and warmed when I hear their voice, see their smile, or feel their loving embrace.

Let them know, God, that I don't like this predicament any more than they do, and that even though my needs are now different, I still want to be included in their lives because, if I lose my family and those dearest to me, then so too will go my will to go on.

I can deal with this disease because I have to, but I just need them to be a little more patient with me; a little more kind.

Lastly, help them, God, so we can get through this together. (copyright (c) Melanie Schurr 2007)

As he finished, Freddie looked up, only to find mother sobbing; no longer tears of sadness, but joy and pride!

"Oh Freddie! Molly! That is beautiful, and it is a message that I hope everyone who has a loved one touched by dementia will hear!" exclaimed mother as tears flowed uncontrollably down her cheeks.

--

Christ has told us to love one another, and treat each other as we would wish to be treated. As such, let us place His message into our hearts, and carry it out in to the world. His love will not only make a difference in how we view and relate to Alzheimer's patients, but also has the ability to transform lives, and soften even the most hardened hearts.

Invite love in.

Invite God in.

Change your life.

Change the world.

When you believe

GHAZNI, Afghanistan : Taliban representatives said Tuesday that 19 South Korean hostages held by the hardline militia for nearly six weeks would be freed "soon" after a successful round of negotiations.

"Both sides agreed that South Korean military forces and their missionary groups would leave Afghanistan and the Taliban would free the hostages very soon," said a Taliban representative, who asked to remain anonymous.

Separately, Taliban spokesman Yousuf Ahmadi said the negotiations between the Islamist movement and South Korean officials had been successful, although he declined to give details. - AFP/ch

See? God does work miracles. Keep praying that the Taliban will keep to their side of the deal, and also remember to thank God for showing mercy on the hostages :)

Life

Life is sweet, life is sour
Life is like a fading flower
I may die this very hour
my very being devoid of power

Fading away like a distant storm
Life is short, life is long
Discerning the right from the wrong
Oh, life is all but a song

A time for laughter, a time for play
A time to kneel down, weep and pray
A time for silence, a time for say
A time of beauty, in the sweet month of May

A life of darkness, a life of tears
A life with friends, foes and fears
A life of scorn, hatred and jeers
A life you know you cannot steer

A life of memories, a life of pain
A life of hard work, of toil and strain
A life of pleasure, of blessings and gain
A life with regret's unmistakable stain

The meaning of life? The life we seek?
Jesus Christ our Lord, Saviour of the weak
The Lion's fierce roar, the Lamb, gentle and meek
He loves us all, though we bear sin's great reek

He stands at the door, waiting in welcome
His arms outstretched, no matter what the outcome
Suffered though we may have some
Jesus Christ the servant King has come!

Hey all!!!

Just a little poem I thought to be quite meaningful... You know, sometimes we find that life just can't get any worse, and we feel as though God just doesn't want us to be happy, or that we are just not good enough... Well, here's some good news for us! God loves us and wants us no matter how sinful we are, all we have to do is believe and confess that we have sinned! It's as simple as that! Being a Christian doesn't mean that everything we do has to be right and perfect... We are sinful humans after all, and we need God to make things right!

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is a gift from God - not by works, so that no on can boast." Ephesians 2:8-9

Let's continue to commit our lives to God everyday!

Time for a change.

Okay, that's gone. I'm sorry to all 'cos I sorta misunderstood. I do remember some who played the game tell me about what the opposite party did, though not in too many words. You're right I-zack, I may have really took the words too seriously. I can also understand how Observer's post may have sparked some flames. Didn't really think on how the guys in our church would want to leave all that in the field and forget about it, i guess.

Mission: Possible

There is a candle
In every soul
Some brightly burning
Some dark and cold

There is a Spirit
Who brings a fire
Ignites a candle
And makes His home

So carry your candle
Run to the darkness
Seek out the hopeless
Confused and torn

Hold out your candle
For all to see it
Take your candle
And go light your world

Frustrated brother
See how he's tried to
Light his own candle
Some other way

See now your sister
She's been robbed and lied to
Still holds a candle
Without a flame

So carry your candle
Run to the darkness
Seek out the lonely
The tired and worn

Hold out your candle
For all to see it
Take your candle
And go light your world

Take your candle
And go light your world

We are a family
Whose hearts are blazing
So let's raise our candles
And light up the sky

Praying to the Father
In the name of Jesus
Make us a beacon
In darkest time

So carry your candle
Run to the darkness
Seek out the lonely
The tired and worn

Hold out your candle
For all to see it
Take your candle
And go light your world

Go light your world
Go light your world
Go light your world
Go light your world

Meaningful song, guys. Think about it.

Happy Birthday Singapore!

As we celebrate 42 years of nationhood, let's not forget to thank God for giving us such a safe and prosperous country with 7% GST!

Tim

Credits to Kara for this:

40 million babies lost to Gods great orphanage,
It's a modern day genocide and a modern day disgrace
If this is a human right then why aren't we free?
The only freedom we have is in a man nailed to a tree.

100 million faces, staring at the sky,
Wondering if this HIV will ever pass us by.
The devil stole the rain and hope trickles down the plug,
But still my Chinese take away could pay for someone's drugs.

Our God reigns, Our God reigns,
Forever your kingdom reigns.

The west has found a gun and it's loaded with 'unsure'
Nip and tuck if you have the bucks in a race to find a cure.
Psalm one hundred and thirty nine is the conscience to our selfish crime,
God didn't screw up when he made you,
He's a father who loves to parade you.

Yes he reigns, yes you reign, yes you reign,
For there is only one true God,
But we've lost the reins on this world,
Forgive us all, forgive us please,
As we fight for this broken world on our knees.

Friendly: PSPC VS Jubilee Presbyterian

EDITOR'S NOTE: This post was actually done on Sunday, but was delayed, which explains the present tense.

Hey all!

Well, today was also the date of a friendly match between Jubilee Presbyterian and a team from Prinsep consisting of some Lighthouse, Campus Hub and Boys Brigade people. The match was played on the field of Bukit Merah Secondary School. Firstly, a huge THANK YOU to the people who came down to support the PLH/TCH/BB team, both the mentors and the youth. Your presence there alone was already very encouraging and inspiring :)

The match kicked off and we took the lead under about 15 minutes i think when our own Lum I-Zack passed to Roy (from Boys Brigade, or sorta ex-Boys Brigade) to finish it. However, we let in two goals and the halftime score left us trailing Jubilee 2-1. The second half started and we fought really hard (WELL DONE, team PLH/TCH/BB!). Unfortunately, we still succumbed to Jubilee and eventually lost 5-3, despite a well taken penalty by I-Zack that had no chance of being saved and another spectacular shot by Ryan (Wong) from a wide angle. However, to be fair, the other team was more organized, and played together pretty regularly, whereas we were working together for the first time, so it was a good effort and a decent scoreline actually.

Tensions were high at times during the match but when the whistle blew for the match to end both team shook hands and made up. Thank God for that, as well as for the fact that though there were some scrapes, no one was seriously injured, so thank God for keeping the whole team safe!

All in all, it was a fun (though tiring) experience and hopefully there'll be more of such things in the future :P

The Duck and the Devil

There was a little boy visiting his grandparents on their farm. He was given a slingshot to play with out in the woods. He practiced in the woods; but he could never hit the target. Getting a little discouraged, he headed back for dinner. As he was walking back he saw Grandma's pet duck. Just out of impulse, he let the slingshot fly, hit the duck square in the head and killed it. He was shocked and grieved! In a panic, he hid the dead duck in the wood pile; only to see his sister watching! Sally had seen it all, but she said nothing.

After lunch the next day Grandma said, 'Sally, let's wash the dishes' But Sally said, 'Grandma, Johnny told me he wanted to help in the kitchen.' Then she whispered to him, 'Remember the duck?' So Johnny did the dishes.

Later that day, Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go fishing and Grandma said, 'I'm sorry but I need Sally to help make supper.' Sally just smiled and said, 'Well that's all right because Johnny told me he wanted to help' She whispered again, 'Remember the duck?' So Sally went fishing and Johnny stayed to help.

After several days of Johnny doing both his chores and Sally's; he finally couldn't stand it any longer. He came to Grandma and confessed that he had killed the duck. Grandma knelt down, gave him a hug and said, 'Sweetheart, I know. You see, I was standing at the window and I saw the whole thing, but because I love you, I forgave you. I was just wondering how long you would let Sally make a slave of you.'

--

Thought for the day and every day thereafter? Whatever is in your past, whatever you have done, and that the devil keeps throwing it up in your face (lying, cheating, debt, fear, bad habits, hatred, anger, bitterness, etc.) whatever it is, you need to know that God was standing at the window and He saw the whole thing. He has seen your whole life. He wants you to know that He loves you and that you are forgiven. He's just wondering how long you will let the devil make a slave of you.

The great thing about God is that when you ask for forgiveness; He not only forgives you, but He forgets. It is by God's grace and mercy that we are saved. Go ahead and make the difference in someone's life today. Always remember: God is at the window! When Jesus died on the cross; he was thinking of you!

God bless!
Samantha :)

5 August '07

Hey all!

Well, today was the Teen Talk on Parent-Teen relationships, given by Mr Moses Lim from Covenant Presbyterian. Some of you old(er) people might remember him from Church Camp '04, where he was invited as the Youth Speaker (Unfortunately, (or fortunately, if you think about it) i'm one of those "older" people).

Well, I'm just here to pen (or type) some of my thoughts regarding the talk. It was a refreshing talk, seeing as it has been some time since the last Teen Talk. The Worship before that was good, and Gabriel did a good job worship leading(Well done, Gabriel!). Also, it was good to have the A & G girls to come join us, and their Percussion Team was really good! Haha it was loud and impressive, to say the least.

The talk gave many points and tips on improving relationships between us teenagers and our parents. However, in my opinion the main gist of the talk was for US to change some of our attitudes toward our parents as well as to erase and change some habits we may have toward them. I believe that this is a very good point. Improving relationships should not just be the job of our dads and mums. We have a part to play too! We should not be "learning to cope" with them. After all, our parents are not pests that we are unable to deal with. It should be a mutual effort, and we have the responsibility to also make the extra effort to be more understanding toward them. The key word would be "empathy". Before we start arguing or disagreeing with our parents, let us put ourselves in their shoes. Is there a particular reason why they may seem "unfair"? Granted, this is easier said than done. However, we should all still make the effort to do so; Even the Bible commands us to obey and honour our parents (Remember the verses from Ephesians and Corinthians as well as the 5th Commandment!

Let's all try to change our attitudes and habits! after all, it's the least we can do to repay the people who brought us into this earth :D

Joseph

(On another note, i noticed that the last song had (almost) everybody jumping! Alright, everyone! :) )

Share the love

Hey everybody!

Tomorrow the Pastor Moses Lim and the girls from Andrew and Grace home are coming down. Let's make them feel welcome, okay?

And not just during the handshaking. I've noticed, other people have noticed, newcomers have complained. Its very obvious: After the welcome song, most of you just head back to sitting with your own friends, leaving the newcomers to feel awkward standing in the middle of nowhere. Even if they come with friends, they feel unwelcome and cling to each other rather than go around and socialize. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with keeping to your friends, but think of how the newcomers feel too. Try and make the effort, 'kay?

Prinsep Lighthouse (PLH) is the youth ministry of Prinsep Street Presbyterian Church. It’s meant for all youths aged 13-18 years old to come together every Sunday for a fellowship as well as to worship God and learn more about Him.PLH is on every Sunday from 11am to 12.45pm. On usual Sundays, we have worship time from 11-11.30am. During worship, we sing songs of praise to God.

After which the youths will break up into their respective groups to do a Bible Study for the rest of the time there.
